The British Embassy in Tunis currently has a vacancy for

Communications Manager 

grade – B3 (L) to start as soon as possible.

 

Do you have the creativity to translate complex government communications into simple yet effective and engaging messages for people? Can you plan ahead in order to design a campaign and see it through from start to finish? Are you able to build networks and strong contacts in order to help multiply messages? Working at the heart of the British Embassy in Tunis, you will coordinate with other parts of the mission in order to deliver British Government messages to all parts of Tunisian government, business and general population. Whether it is amplifying messages from visiting British VIPs, supporting the Ambassador’s communication strategy, running our social media platform or delivering media campaigns, the work you undertake will make a difference and will help ensure Tunisians are aware of what the UK is doing in Tunisia.

 

While the work is high-pressured and fast-paced you will be at the centre of things, working alongside UK Ministers, senior diplomats and business leaders which will be rewarding and fascinating especially in 2019 with the UK’s exit from the European Union due to take place meaning there will be plenty of communications opportunities to mark this event.

Main duties and responsibilities:

The Communications Manager will:

  • Prepare and deliver media plans for VIP visits and key events in Tunisia and systematically evaluate activities;
  • Contribute towards (and in some cases lead on) the planning and delivery of communication campaigns in Tunisia;
  • Manage the relationship with the local media and maintain a central contacts list;
  • Manage the Embassy’s digital platform, using the website, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to engage with Tunisian opinion formers and influencer.
  • Maintain a core media script;
  • Keep the local press informed of embassy initiatives, UK policies, etc. (e.g. by producing English and French/Arabic press releases/notices);
  • Handle media enquiries;
  • Be a member of the embassy’s crisis committee;
  • Monitor the media to stay informed of local developments, alerting colleagues and writing reports as necessary; and,
  • Provide ad-hoc translation and cover within the team, as necessary.
  • Monitor the section’s budgetary spend.
  • Oversight of section budget: approximately 15,000 TND for current Financial Year.

At present, there is no direct line management associated with this role. However, there may be opportunities to manage short term interns who you will need to will be opportunities to provide mentoring or coaching to other members of the team and/or wider embassy.

Minimum qualifications

 

Essential:

  • Fluency in English, French and Arabic both written and spoken. The embassy social media accounts are run in all three languages so you should be proficient.
  • At least two years of professional experience in communication or journalism.
  • Knowledge and understanding of how media function on national or local levels.
  • High standard of spoken and written English (IELTS score of at least 7 or equivalent)
  • Bilingual level of spoken and written French and Arabic
  • Experience in productions of communications tools (written and multimedia);
  • Knowledge of social media management and digital communication
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of Tunisia’s media scene
  • An interest in domestic and international politics and current affairs
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft applications and basic editing of photographs and videos
  • Ability to work as part of a team and independently

Desirable:

  • Experience of communications and media campaigns
  • Experience of working in media or within international organisations

Working hours and remuneration:

Conditioned working hours are 40 hours gross per week. Standard working hours are from 08:00-16:30 from Monday to Thursday and 08:00-13:00 on Fridays. As Communications Manager, it is likely you will need to undertake some travel throughout Tunisia to accompany the Ambassador in order to help produce and amplify communications material. Likewise, there will be instances of some evening or weekend work where you will need to attend events. Where you need to do this you will be offered time off in lieu.

The British Embassy in Tunisia offers an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role. Initial salary will be TND 3,052 per month while on probation. Salary after probation is TND 3,776. This is a Full-time, Fixed Term contract for 1 year (renewable).

 

This position will give the jobholder an opportunity to play an active role in the development and delivery of government media campaigns in addition to exposure to multiple strands of diplomatic work. 

 

There is the possibility of attending a dedicated communication skills workshop in the UK subject to budget and course availability. You will also learn from other British embassies in the region and have access to learning and development discussions provided by the British Ambassador and other senior diplomats. 

The successful candidate will be subject to a 90-day probationary period.

The appointment will also be subject to satisfactory local and UK security clearances.
