The British Embassy in Tunis currently has a vacancy for a Senior Counter Terrorism Liaison Officer, Grade – C5 (L) to start as soon as possible.
Building and maintaining strong working relationships with senior members of the Tunisian government in the security and counter-terrorism (CT) hierarchy to support the achievement of United Kingdom strategic CT objectives and to provide high-quality analysis and reporting to senior Embassy colleagues and London stakeholders.
The UK Government is expanding its CT and Counter-Extremism (CE) network overseas, following a Strategic Defence and Security Review which re-emphasised the importance of The UK’s CT work. This new position is part of the new global Counter Terrorism and Extremism Network (CTEN). You will help deliver UK strategic objectives working with a range of colleagues from different UK Government departments.
As part of the CTEN you will:
In response to the Strategic Defence and Security Review (SDSR) 2015), we are expanding our Counter Terrorism and Counter Extremism efforts worldwide. Bilateral cooperation at the operational and political levels is being strengthened with a number of key partners worldwide, including Tunisia, with whom we enjoy a positive working relationship on security issues.
The jobholder, along with others in the CTEN, will be expected to maintain and strengthen the Embassy’s network of contacts on CT/Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) issues, with Ministers, senior officials, military and law enforcement colleagues and civil society. The ability to liaise smoothly and effectively and report important information accurately to Embassy colleagues and London stakeholders is key.
The job holder will need to leverage this network of contacts to deliver results against UK Government CT strategies, and to use their influencing and strategic thinking skills to increase UK/Tunisian political cooperation on CT/CVE issues. You will need to track developments within the Tunisian CT system, identify influencing factors in the Tunisian decision-making process, and seek opportunities for the UK to push our key messages in support of operational activity.
The jobholder will be expected to collaborate with colleagues to ensure that activity across the CT landscape is aligned and effective. You will work alongside colleagues from a range of government departments, many of whom have wider security as part of their portfolio: team cooperation is vital. While part of the new CTEN in Tunis, the jobholder will also work closely with others in the Embassy in delivering progress towards the Embassy’s CT goals.
This is a job for a self-starter who has the energy and drive to help develop the Embassy’s network of contacts and deliver results. But you’ll also need to be adaptable, and ready to react to changing priorities, liaising confidently across a broad range of sometimes technical issues. It will be an opportunity to demonstrate how you balance the need to respond to tight deadlines with the need to make space for forward-looking analytical work, whilst delivering in a high-profile and complex policy area.
Working in a large Embassy, the jobholder will have ample opportunities to contribute to a range of Embassy initiatives, including on crisis management.
*An existing network of senior contacts within the security sector of the Tunisian government would be an advantage, as would an understanding of the UK Government and its CT architecture;
*Experience of security programme management
