a Security Project Officer
Grade – B3 (L) to start as soon as possible.
Main Purpose of the Job:
There are two vacancies for this role, one in the British Embassy in Tunis (BET) and one in the Libya Office in Tunis (LOT), which is located in the Embassy as well. The aims of the two jobs are to deliver project management, government liaison, and administrative support functions in support of the objectives of BET and LOT in the security sector.
Main duties and responsibilities:
The jobholders will be working closely with UK diplomatic staff to deliver British Embassy Tunis (BET) and Libya Office Tunis (LOT) objectives in the security sector in Tunisia and Libya. These roles involve project management, government liaison, and administrative support functions in a security context, with the ultimate aim of providing resilience to the relevant teams in these three functions.
BET and LOT carry out capacity-building work to help build the Government of Tunisia’s and the Government of Libya’s ability to tackle security threats and mount an effective response to a crisis. Key tasks in this role are:
The successful candidates will need to ensure that all project activity meets the UK government’s high programme management standards. They will need to be experienced in project management in an international context; able to negotiate and reconcile different stakeholder objectives; well-organised, flexible and ready to react quickly in the event of sudden need; able to engage effectively with senior UK and Tunisian or Libyan government interlocutors.
The successful candidates will be experienced at managing programme budgets, and at ensuring expenditure is planned and monitored, correct budget forecasts are made and that value for money is sought at all times. They will be expected to familiarise themselves quickly with the UK government’s financial management processes.
As well as the project management and policy support functions, there will also be a requirement for administrative support in times of special need. Therefore, applicants should be content to perform a variety of roles, including basic administrative support, according to demand within the team.
On occasion, the jobholders may be asked to translate during official meetings, or carry out short written translations between Arabic or French and English.
An ability to work effectively and collaboratively is essential: the successful candidate will have excellent people skills and a track record of working seamlessly with others.

The British Embassy in Tunisia offers an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role. Initial salary will be TND 3,052 per month while on probation. Salary after probation is TND 3,776. This is a Full-time, Fixed Term contract for 1 year (renewable).
Conditioned working hours are 40 hours gross per week. Standard working hours are from 08:00-16:30 from Monday to Thursday and 08:00-13:00 on Fridays.
There may be occasional opportunities to work from home or adopt flexible working patterns, upon approval by the line manager. The job is not suitable for remote working.
The successful candidates must be prepared to make occasional travel outside Tunis.
This role will give the jobholders an opportunity to come into contact with a range of security issues and see how strategies are implemented to confront these challenges. It will give insight into the diplomatic world more broadly and how security issues are tackled in the context of bilateral relationships.
The successful candidate will be subject to a 90-day probationary period.
The appointment will also be subject to satisfactory local and UK security clearances.
