Who we are:

Human Rights Watch (HRW) investigates and reports on human rights abuses happening in all corners of the world. We are roughly 500 people of 70-plus nationalities who work to protect the most at risk, from vulnerable minorities and civilians in wartime, to refugees and children in need. The Multimedia Division is where we craft our visual messaging and deliver it to our audiences in order to raise public awareness of the human rights violations HRW investigates and documents.

The opportunity:

The Junior Producer/Editor, Audio-Visual should be video journalist able to edit and post-produce compelling stories whichexpose abuses, present solutions to advance rights, showcase activist partners worldwide, and persuade key audiences to embrace and value human rights. This role will ideally be based in Kinshasa, São Paulo, or Tunis and reports to the Multimedia Deputy Director based in London. This is a fixed-term, full-time position for one year (with the possibility of extension), with an anticipated start in August 2022.

Due to COVID-19, many of our global offices are operating in reduced capacities. The successful candidate may be required to work remotely initially or if local requirements mandate it. We recognize that this moment, during the pandemic, is a uniquely difficult time for most people, particularly those with caregiving responsibilities, and we aim to be as flexible and supportive as possible in both the recruitment for and onboarding of this position.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Research, produce and edit multimedia products that will further HRW’s global advocacy objectives;
2. Monitor television and online appearances of HRW staff to identify key soundbites;
3. Edit and post-produce audio programs and podcasts;
4. Create audiograms and edit video clips for HRW’s social media platforms;
5. Incorporate graphics and animation when appropriate to enhance video impact;
6. Deliver outputs in a timely manner and be consistent with the agreed strategy and priorities of the Media Department;
7. Track podcast performance;
8. Manage content distribution, logging, archiving, footage and other tasks related to production for freelance editors; and
9. Perform other tasks as may be assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: A bachelor’s degree is required. A degree in Journalism, Video production, Communications, or a related field is highly desirable. Candidates with equivalent training/experience and a passion for journalism and/or human rights work are also encouraged to apply.

Experience: A Minimum three (3) years of experience of working in a professional environment; prior experience working in a newsroom or video production company is highly desirable.

Related Skills and Knowledge:

1. Exceptional oral and written communication skills in English are required; proficiency in another language is highly desirable.
2. Strong command of Adobe Premiere, Adobe Audition and After Effect is required.
3. Knowledge of motion graphics and animation is a plus.
4. Strong knowledge of video formats, transcoding, and compression is required.
5. Solid news judgment and an eye for elements that will help HRW tell great stories is desirable.
6. Interest in human rights and curiosity about the world is desirable.
7. Excellent time-management skills and ability to prioritize tasks while maintaining a strong attention to detail is required.
8. Excellent communication skills, self-motivated, creative problem-solver, highly organized, and demonstrates the ability to work well as a member of a team are required.
9. Ability to multi-task multiple stories while also producing long-term projects, work under pressure, and thrive in a deadline-driven environment is required.
10. Ability to manage and prioritize projects with careful attention to details both in creative production and editorial content is required.
11. Demonstrate traits of tact, discretion, sound editorial judgment and the ability to function in a confidential capacity is required.
